It's easy to fall into the trap of multitasking in the name of productivity but more often than not these tasks aren't supporting our bigger visions and priorities. So today I'm looking into the science behind time and attention management and exploring the secrets to momentum, thriving and better solutions for female founders.
Time and Attention + Energy and Intention
I believe if we apply these same principles of time management to managing our energy we can exponentially increase our overall quality of life. I'll include some practical tips and inspiration for improving momentum, focus, and success below.
What Harm Can It Cause To Stop And Check Emails?
A lot....In a compelling study from UC Irvine, they found that it takes an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to regain focus after a distraction like quickly checking emails or messages. This statistic is startling and underscores the significant impact of frequent task-switching.Â
Many of us pride ourselves on our ability to multitask, but this study reveals the hidden costs associated with this habit. Each transition from one task to another not only consumes time but also mental energy, ultimately diminishing our productivity and increasing stress levels.Â
Attention Management
Begin by taking inventory of the distractions in your life. These can range from constant email notifications to negative influences that drain your energy. Identifying these distractions is the first step toward mitigating their impact. Implement strategies like blocking out specific times for concentrated work, turning off unnecessary notifications, and setting clear boundaries with yourself and others.
What Is The Compounding Cost of Misaligned Activities?Â
Over committing, busy work, self sacrificing or self minimizing, fear, lack of clarity, procrastination, poor habits, negative influences etc. anything that is draining you of your life force energy that ultimately is not serving your higher purpose is a distraction, that may be costing you more than you realize.
Â
Energy management isn't just about eliminating distractions; it's about focusing your energy on what truly matters and fueling it. Reflect on your purpose and what you are passionate about. Having a clear intention can serve as a compass, guiding your actions and decisions.Â
In another study, participants were given some form of positive interaction before tackling complex problems, things like a piece of chocolate, good music or an inspiring video while other groups received no such interaction before presented with the problem to work through.Â
Predictably, the group exposed to positive interactions performed better. They consistently had more creativity, more success and better solutions.Â
Energy and Intention ManagementÂ
Owning your energy is as essential as owning your time. Understand what drains your energy, and make conscious choices to engage in activities that uplift and replenish it. Incorporating these principles of attention and energy management into your life can lead to significant improvements in productivity, focus, and overall well-being. This might involve setting aside time for hobbies, practicing mindfulness, or engaging in physical exercise.
The Power of Uplifting OthersÂ
Incorporate micro moments of peace, joy, and inspiration into your daily routine. Something as simple as enjoying a piece of chocolate, listening to uplifting music, or watching an inspiring video or podcast can significantly enhance your creative abilities and problem-solving skills.Â
By limiting distractions, clarifying your purpose, and nurturing your energy, you can unlock your full potential and live a more fulfilling and impactful life. Embrace these changes, and watch as your quality of life elevates to new heights.
Uplifting others can also lift your own spirit. Acts of kindness and support have a ripple effect, benefiting both the giver and the receiver. Make it a habit to encourage and support those around you, creating a positive environment for everyone.Â
Putting Theory into Practice Personal ReflectionÂ
Take time to reflect on where your energy is going. Are you overcommitting, engaging in busy work, or doing things out of habit rather than purpose? Identify these patterns and make conscious decisions to align your daily activities with your higher purpose.Â
Balanced Boundaries While it’s important to set boundaries to limit distractions, it’s equally important not to become overly rigid. Leave room for opportunities and spontaneity. Finding this balance requires ongoing self-awareness and adjustment.Â
